What does GCVD do?

Well, it's pretty simple...

ABOUT US

Castro Valley residents are smart.

They want their voices heard, but don't have a place to do that.

GCVD coordinates debates for them.

We live in a time where politicians dominate the news and self-proclaimed pundits rule the airwaves. We, as voters, as homeowners, as parents, children, and citizens, are sometimes limited to listening to only them. We base our decisions of what they say and, often times, we ignore what’s happening right around us. That is to say, we are more in tune with what the nation broadcasts and deaf to what our neighbors think.

Debates have formed the basis of our nation. Going back to our Founding Fathers, if debate were not had, America, as we know it, may not have been formed. It is the civic responsibility of residents to not only be informed, but to be exposed to those viewpoints that challenge them to think smarter and be inspired.

After The Great Castro Valley Marriage Equality Debate, held on July 17th, 2012 in the Castro Valley Library, came to a close, a profound realization materialized. Though it may not immediately seem so, Castro Valley residents are passionate about issues that affect them, their families, friends, neighbors, and the nation. We have intelligent people with well-reasoned viewpoints but lack the venue and opportunity to let them express it. As the fifth most populous unincorporated area in California, Castro Valley lacks a city hall where citizens can have their voices heard on important issues.

The Great Castro Valley Debate (GCVD) fills the lack of dialogue in Castro Valley by providing the necessary means for citizens to join in civilized discussion on topics that matter the most to them. It is a unique venture that will not only bring the local community together, but introduce everyone to the diversity Castro Valley has to offer. With the right leadership, vision, and strategic alliances, we can make The Great Castro Valley Debate not only a popular venue for intelligent discussion, but a model for all of California, if not the nation, to follow.

We’re excited to offer this opportunity to Castro Valley, especially as Castro Valley residents ourselves, and are currently looking for motivated individuals for leadership openings. We hope you read on to find out more about what The Great Castro Valley Debate is all about and how it can help you learn more about our town.
